ExoTile Erosion Protection

➤ Spring 2024 ➤ Southend-on-Sea ➤ Catchment to Coast

Problem

ExoTiles stacked on a pallet ready to be transported to project site. The top layer features patterned, protruding cups which retain water

The conventional approaches used to protect our waterfront areas from erosion are typically made of smooth concrete which can not only be unsightly, but supports limited biodiversity and hinders the spread of species between habitats through fragmentation.

Solution

Our ExoTiles seek to combine the function of erosion protection offered by conventional approaches with the creation of habitats which support a large diversity of species. This is achieved through the inclusion of a variety of surface textures which increase surface complexity, providing habitats for coastal species to thrive. Exo offer a range of surface textures which ensure your project goals are achieved, whether it’s seamless integration, targeting of specific species or community engagement (or all three!)

Our ExoTile units can be installed using traditional deployment methods, meaning no additional considerations are required.

Results

We have produced a total of 60 ExoTiles for Southend Borough Council, which will help them to defend vulnerable areas of coastline whilst achieving their Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) responsibilities. We provided a variety of our surface textures, such as our iconic “Hex” texture, as well as some newer designs like our natural rock texture and “biogenic” designs.

With continued focus on how our infrastructure impacts marine life, we can ensure that we leave space for nature whilst achieving our own development goals. Our ExoTiles are a great alternative for seawall repair where Essex blocks are already used, protecting coastal areas whilst offering a range of habitats for intertidal species.
