2024 at Exo Engineering

2024 has been another exciting year for Exo Engineering, filled with ground-breaking projects and innovation. With the support of programs such as Innovate UK, OWGP and Launch Academy, we have been able to work alongside clients to deliver Nature-Inclusive Designs which unify infrastructure function with habitat provision. Their continued support allows us to expand our capacity to develop bespoke solutions to the unique project challenges of our clients.

We wanted to take the time to celebrate some key achievements for Exo Engineering this year!

January-April

The year began with preparing 56 ExoTiles and 23 ExoHabitats for the Catchment to Coast project

The project is part funded by DEFRA and provides a holistic approach to water management and flood defence. Our role in the project is providing low carbon, Nature Inclusive flood and erosion defences to vulnerable communities from Southend-on-Sea to Thurrock.

Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada

After numerous visits in the past years to Halifax, Exo committed to manufacturing several artificial reef solutions for the local port. This project was made possible with Innovate UK Global Incubator Programme.

Marine Energy Wales conference 13th-14 March

Exo Engineering were exhibitors at the Marine Energy Wales conference in Swansea. Having deployed 16 tonnes of our nature inclusive solutions in 2023 at META , a pre-consented test site owned and operated by Marine Energy Wales, we were able to share the latest findings and opportunities for Nature Inclusive Design

Bespoke artificial reefs

Following the release of design criteria for artificial reefs at an offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea, we began to develop concepts which would help developers to adhere to the requirements…

Research & Development

Having completed the first major project of the year, we had some time to trial some new methods that we had been developing. This involved developing new textures and new ways of creating textures at a large scale.

Global Offshore Wind, Manchester 17-19 June

In collaboration with ORE Catapult, Exo Engineering presented our Nature Inclusive scour protection solutions to key players in the offshore wind sector.

Bespoke artificial Reefs

Having developed concepts for artificial reefs which would help developers meet design requirements for new projects, our 4.5t bespoke artificial reefs were deployed for the first time.

September-December

Catchment to Coast: ExoTiles production & Installation

This autumn saw the completion of new, innovative Nature Inclusive Designs as part of this scheme. Look out for announcements in the new year highlighting the role of Exo Engineering in the creation of these concepts.

Bespoke artificial reef monitoring

During early autumn we completed ROV and eDNA monitoring of our artificial reefs in the Celtic and North Sea. Initial results already show the reefs being occupied by a number of fish species which demonstrates the early success of these habitats.

Spotlight 2024

December saw us exhibiting at Spotlight 2024 with ORE Catapult’s Launch Academy programme. We were fortunate enough to speak with Dr Stella Peace, Interim Executive Chair at Innovate UK, and Andrew MacDonald, Director of ORE Catapult, about the benefits of our Nature Inclusive solutions.
